Is It Time To Upgrade Your Windows?

For a practical way to add colour, character and privacy without compromising performance, look no further than new windows with stained glass. Rather than retrofitting decorative glass into an existing frame, we design and make entirely new timber windows with stained glass built in from the start. This stained glass can either be original stained glass re-used or be newly made. Stained glass has been part of our work for many years, and it remains one of the most rewarding parts of what we do.

We design, manufacture and install new windows with stained glass for homes across London and the surrounding areas. Every window is made to order and fitted by experienced carpenters.

How new stained glass windows are made

Although materials and standards have improved, the process of making stained glass windows has changed very little over time. It remains a skilled craft that relies on experience, accuracy and patience.

Once a design has been agreed, the stained glass is made by hand using individual pieces of coloured and textured glass, cut to shape and joined using traditional leadwork. If we are matching an existing design, this stage can be relatively straightforward. More complex or bespoke designs take longer and often involve several revisions before production begins.

We can also use original restored stained glass within new windows that we manufacture.

For new windows with stained glass, the finished glass panel is then sealed within a double-glazed unit. This protects the stained glass while allowing the window to meet modern performance standards. The completed unit is fitted into a bespoke timber frame made in our workshop, ready for installation.

From design approval to manufacture, lead times typically range from a few weeks for simpler designs to longer for more detailed work. We’ll always explain the process and timescales clearly before work begins.

Domestic stained glass windows, designed and made in-house

Our domestic stained glass windows are designed as complete units, not standard windows with decorative glass added later. That means proportions, glazing bars, timber profiles and glass designs all work together.

    You can choose from:

    • Traditional leaded and stained glass patterns
    • Subtle coloured highlights or fully decorative panels
    • Period-appropriate designs for Victorian and Edwardian homes
    • Simpler stained glass styles for more modern properties

All windows are handmade in our UK workshop and tailored to your property.

    Performance matters, not just appearance

New windows with stained glass still need to perform like modern windows. Ours are built to meet current standards, with careful attention to insulation, security and durability.

    Benefits include:

    • Improved thermal efficiency compared to older windows
    • Reduced draughts and cold spots
    • Modern locking systems and toughened glass where required
    • Long-lasting painted timber finishes

We’ll talk you through the technical side during your survey, in plain terms.

What’s the cost of new windows with stained glass?

The cost of new windows with stained glass varies depending on size, design and complexity. Decorative glass is more labour-intensive than clear glazing, but it’s also a long-term feature that adds real value.

    • Typical factors that affect price:
    • Size and number of windows
    • Complexity of the stained glass design
    • Timber choice and paint finish
    • Whether the glass is newly made or re-used
    • Access and installation requirements

    Indicative pricing

Window type Typical starting price (UK)
New stained glass casement window From £2,500
New stained glass sash window From £3,000
Larger or highly decorative designs Priced individually

These are guide prices only. For accurate new windows with stained glass prices, we always recommend a site visit.

As a rough reference, we’ve previously repaired and refitted existing stained glass across multiple windows in a Kent property for around £400, while a new bespoke leaded glass installation for a front-facing window came in closer to £950. Every project is different, but these examples help illustrate the range.

    New stained glass doors

While windows are the main focus, we also design and install new stained glass doors. A new stained glass front door can make a strong first impression while still providing privacy and security.

    Options include:

    • Timber front doors with stained glass panels
    • Side panels and fanlights with matching designs
    • Coordinated door and window glazing schemes

If you’re considering new stained glass doors alongside windows, we’ll make sure everything works together visually.

FAQs about new windows and doors with stained glass

Replacing or installing new windows or doors with stained glass raises a lot of questions, especially around design, cost and suitability for your property.

Below are some of the questions we’re most commonly asked by homeowners considering new stained glass windows. If you’d like to talk through your project in more detail, we’re always happy to help.

    Matthew & Nathan Smith

Yes. If your property already has stained or leaded glass, we can recreate the style, proportions and colour palette so the new windows sit comfortably alongside the originals. This is common in Victorian and Edwardian homes, where consistency across elevations matters.

They can be. In most cases, stained glass is incorporated into a double-glazed unit so you get modern thermal performance without losing the decorative detail. We’ll explain the options and what’s appropriate for your property during the survey.

Yes, they usually do. Stained glass is made by hand and takes longer to produce than clear glazing. The overall cost depends on window size, design complexity and how much decorative glass is used. We’ll always explain the pricing clearly before you commit.

Sometimes. If the existing glass is in good condition, it may be possible to restore and incorporate it into a new timber window. This isn’t always suitable, but we’re happy to assess it and give honest advice.
